Rodolfo Rene Gordon

April 4, 1962 — March 22, 2022

Alpine, Texas

Rodolfo Rene Gordon, better known as Rudy G., a life-long resident of Alpine, TX, entered eternal rest in his Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, March 22, 2022.

In his church at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, the Rosary will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at 9:30 a.m., with the funeral mass immediately followed by Father Pablo Matta. Internment of his remains will follow at Holy Angels Cemetery.

Rudy G. was born in Alpine, TX, on April 4, 1962, at Big Bend Memorial Hospital, to Lewis Bly and Maria Belia Gordon. Rudy G. began his career as a cook at Lewis’ Cafe at the feet of his dad, Lewis Gordon. From there, he grew and expanded his skills to be a well-known cook, a restaurant manager, and a beloved ‘task-master’ when training waitstaff at various restaurants in Alpine and Ft. Stockton. At the point of being burned out with the business of restaurants, he switched careers and found himself as a trainee in the construction industry. Much to his chagrin, and because of his incredible work ethic and thinking-outside-of-the-box intelligence, he became a leader in that endeavor, as well.

On the home front, Rudy fell in love with Gloria in 1986, and they married at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in 1997. Alex (married to John Chavez) was born in 1989 to complete the family: Rudy and Gloria’s pride and joy. Rudy’s stepchildren include Richard Covarrubias, Rory Covarrubias Contreras (married to Manny Contreras), Javier Covarrubias (married to Tanna).

As an alumni from Alpine High School class of 1980, Rudy G. enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends, classmates, coworkers, and people who knew him. Rudy had a lot of nicknames, like Rudy G., Cyrus, Sweetness, and Otts, to name a few. His friends remember him as a funny, quiet, intelligent, and talented man who was a great listener for those who needed a safe, judgment-free zone. He befriended people from all walks of life and even though, like all of us, he faced his own demons, he built relationships and extended his skills to help friends and clients beyond regular limits, not because he had to, but because he had the knowledge or could learn how to do something to help others: YouTube was among his favorite channels. Rudy G. was a passionate cook who loved sharing his expertise in cooking, especially prime rib, grilled chicken, chiles rellenos, macaroni and cheese, fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, to name just a few, with family, friends, neighbors, and those who he knew would enjoy a good meal during the holidays or when he cooked for family and friends’ gatherings. Of all that he did well and all he loved to do, most of all, Rudy G. doted on his grandchildren and was known as Pop-Pop by his granddaughters, Ava and Emma.

Rudy G. is preceded in death by his parents Lewis Bly and Maria Belia Gordon, his sister María Mónica Martínez, his brother Michael (Paco) Hector Martinez, and his grandson Baby Sawyer Covarrubias.

Rudy G. is survived by his wife, Gloria Gordon, Alex Chavez and her daughters, Ava and Emma Chavez, 8 grandchildren, 2 great granddaughters, and his siblings: Lupe Rodriguez (married to Joe Rodriguez) and family of Carlsbad, NM; Rita Gordon of Alpine, TX; Jessica Gordon and family of Alpine, TX; Lorina “Sugar” Soza (married to John Klingemann) and family of San Angelo, TX; Donna Gordon of Houston, TX; and Ramona Moore and family of San Antonio, TX. Rudy G. is fondly loved and remembered by his many nieces and nephews, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, comadres, compadres, godchildren, friends—many of whom considered him a brother, neighbors, coworkers, and acquaintances.

For the funeral service, Rudy G. will be attended by pallbearers John Chavez (son-in-law), John Klingemann (brother-in-law), Joe Rodriguez (brother-in-law), and Elias Soza (nephew).

The family thanks first responders, members of the community, the ministries of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, and Alpine Memorial Funeral Home for helping us with every aspect of this trying time. With family and friends, listening to memories and sharing laughter, tears and hugs are the greatest gifts we can give one another when nothing else soothes the great depth of sorrow we feel for our beloved Rudy G., who we know, without a shadow of doubt, is resting in eternal peace. God bless you all.
