Reid Mcclellan

April 27, 1940 — October 15, 2022

San Angelo, Texas

Reid Hampton McClellan was born to Robley (Bob) McClellan and Grace Oweta McClellan on April 27, 1940, in Colorado City, Texas. He was nearly born on the Spade Ranch but luckily, they made it to the Colorado City hospital just in time.

After Reid’s birth, Bob left the cattle punchers way of life and purchased a small farm in Midland, TX to begin farming. In 1943, when Reid was just 3 years old, Bob passed away in a tragic hunting accident. Grace then married Frank William Satterfield who went on to raise Reid as his own. Grace and Frank also blessed Reid with two younger sisters, Joan Satterfield and Judith Simon.

Reid grew up in Midland, TX and graduated from Midland High School. Reid furthered his education at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree, along with his teaching certificate.

While attending Sul Ross, he met the love of his life, Jessie Mae McDonald, in the summer of 1959. Jessie made it a point to be in the cafeteria when Reid was by watching for him from her dorm window. Eventually, they grew fond of each other and began dating. Reid and Jessie loved to eat at the Pharmacy Soda Fountain Shop in Alpine when they didn’t like the cafeteria food.

After graduating college, Reid and Jessie married on February 23, 1963. That same year, Reid was drafted into the army during the Vietnam War era, serving a total of 8 years, including active and inactive duty. While inactive, Reid went to work for The State of Texas Highway Department in Monahans, TX while Jessie taught school

They eventually moved to Sanderson, TX where Reid began his 37 year career with Southern Pacific Railroad. They had 2 children, Robley Frank McClellan (1973) and Michael (Mike) Terrance McClellan (1974).

In 1994, Reid and his family suffered tragedy when they lost Rob due to a terrible car accident. Reid, Jessie, and Mike got by with God’s grace and the overwhelming love from their family and town.

In 2005, they suffered another hardship when Jessie became ill. Reid stepped up, honoring his commitment to his wife and took care of Jessie all the way to his dying breath.

In December 2017, we almost lost Reid to yet another tragic accident, where he suffered severe burns while trying to fry a turkey for his family’s Christmas dinner. God provided Reid the strength to defy death through Reid’s love for his family and the many prayers and acts of generosity and kindness from his community.

Reid was a loving, kind, and caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. Reid never met a stranger and always enjoyed visiting with anyone who would lend an ear. He loved his town and community and was always proud to call Sanderson home. He was an extremely generous man and was always more than happy to lend a helping hand to anyone and everyone who needed it. Reid was an avid hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman, and water-skiing fool. Reid passed his love for the outdoors onto his sons, and their legacy continues with Mike to this day, and now Reid’s granddaughter, Elizabeth Mae McClellan.

Reid was preceded in death by his mother, Grace Oweta Satterfield, father, Robley (Bob) McClellan, stepfather, Frank William Satterfield, and son, Robley Frank McClellan. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jessie Mae McClellan, son, Michael Terrance McClellan and wife, Shea McClellan, grandson, Cameron Bryson Foote, granddaughter, Elizabeth Mae McClellan, great grandson, Blayze Kooper Foote, and sisters Joan Satterfield and Judith Simon, along with many other family members.

In lieu of sending flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Rob McClellan Memorials Scholarship Fund in care of the Terrell County Independent School District.
