"Lichie" Jose Vega, Sr.

May 18, 1950 — May 2, 2020

“Lichie” Jose Luis Vega Sr., was born on May 18, 1950 in Alpine, TX. He was a life-long resident of Alpine, he loved his little town, and made it very clear that he would never leave his home. Lichie married the love of his life, Barbara Orndorff Vega, in November of 1971 and spent their marriage loving each other through the good and bad times. The life they built together is what love stories are made of. . .maybe not the traditional love story, but a love story that was held together with the strength of their love for each other. He has four children and one step-son: Joey, Julie, Billie Jo, Rex, and Randy. From those children he was given 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. The love he had for his family was powerful.

How do you honor a man as great as Lichie: the husband, the father, the grandfather, the great-grandfather, the friend, the hunter, the MAN? Words fall short in this task. To know him was to love him or hate him, but regardless of which one it was—he was respected. His love was unconditional. His loyalty was for life. His willingness to help someone, anyone was without expectations. He would never hesitate for a second to give you the shirt off his back or his last dollar. He FORGAVE. His heart was pure and true. He was the toughest, meanest, most loving man you could have ever met---and he never met a stranger. He loved to meet and talk to everyone. One of his greatest ‘gifts’ was that he could read a person immediately. He told it like it was because there was no time or need for sugar-coating.

He was the protector of his family and his friends. There was never a situation he would back down from when it came to safeguarding his family and friends. If you needed him, he was there. . .one way or another, he would do what it took to take care of what was needed. At a staggering 5’ 5”ish (and that was pushing it), he was a force to be reckoned with.

He was the greatest story-teller of all time. If you had the chance to hear him talk about his hunting trips or his escapades when he was younger, you were in for a special ride. He had several stories he loved to tell over and over and over and over again—each time with a little extra suspense and spice. He enjoyed talking about his hunting trips and Terlingua Ranch the most. He never missed a year and has taken more men and boys than can be counted. He had the opportunity to share these moments with his kids, his grandkids, friends, their kids, and even their grandkids. 45+ years of memories hunting, laughing, yelling, cussing, and traveling the twists and turns of the roads on Terligua Ranch.

Like every other person on this planet, he had good days and bad days, but on each of those days, he always remembered and thanked God for his life and blessings. He wasn’t a church goer, but he was a man of strong faith and belief in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
