Alpine, Texas

Gale Ray Smith, age 80, of Alpine, Texas died on Tuesday, March 22, 2023, in Alpine, Texas. He was born September 27, 1942, in Bellville, Texas to Potsie and Bessie (Slama) Smith. He married his sweetheart and soulmate, Mary Elizabeth Camp, in June 1963. Gale went to work at the Texas Highway Department (Texas Department of Transportation) in 1966 at the Houston District’s West Harris Maintenance Office. After retiring, Gale and Mary moved to Alpine to build their dream home in the mountains. He loved the fresh air, watching the deer walk by the house each day, and relaxing.
He loved to travel. He drove his family thousands of miles on summer trips throughout the US. Gale had a passion for classic cars and hot rods. He and his friends would spend many hours fixing up old cars and trucks. He enjoyed watching old westerns and game shows. Gale also enjoyed time with family and friends at cookouts. He restored a Jeep and enjoyed off road rides exploring the Big Bend area with friends.
Gale never met a stranger and was always there to help out a friend. He was a loving husband and father, always supporting his girls in whatever they wanted to do.
Gale is preceded in death by his parents Potsie and Bessie Smith, and his younger brother, Jerry. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Elizabeth Smith; daughters, Cynthia Huggins and husband Timothy, and Karen Othon and husband Charles; grandchildren, Kathryn Whittington and husband Blake, Amanda Nelson and husband Kyle, Christopher Huggins, Daniel Othon and Alexis Othon; great grandchildren, Luke Huggins, Julianne Whittington and Miles Whittington; brother-in-law Eddie Camp; nieces Deborah Newsome and Rhonda Smith, and nephew Edward Camp; and numerous cousins.
