Martin Hammer

With the strength and gentleness of his beloved Lord and Savior, Martin Edward Hammer, closed his eyes to his earthly home and opened them to a much grander and glorious homecoming on Thursday, November 1st, 2018 at Big Bend Regional Medical Center in Alpine, Texas, Martin was 93.
Martin was born on July 21st, 1925 in Blackburn, Oklahoma to Emanuel Martin Hammer, and Hulda Julia (Warma) Hammer. At the age of two, Martin and his family moved to Wink, Texas in which his father owned and ran Hammer Grocery and Meat Market.
Martin graduated from Wink High School, in which he excelled as a musician playing the euphonium. Martin entered the Army Air Corp and served his country faithfully, upon his discharge, he returned to Wink, and took up running Hammer Grocery and Meat Market.
For ten years, Martin served the veterans of Winkler County as the Veterans Service Officer. Upon his retirement from Winkler County, Martin and his wife Joyce moved to Alpine, Texas. Upon moving to Alpine, Martin joined several musical groups, as well as joining the Alpine Community Band. Martin played with many wonderful musicians, as well as for many audiences throughout his musical career, he loved playing for the opening services at his home church, First Christian Church, his German Oompah Group, Salvation Army annual Red Kettle Campaign, Sul Ross State University bands, and various other groups. His love for music was lifelong, and through this love, he motivated and molded many younger and older musicians.
Funeral services for Martin was held on Monday, November 5th, 2018 at Alpine First Christian Church, with John Cary serving as officiant. Burial followed at Kermit Cemetery in Kermit, Texas.
Those serving as pallbearers were: Joel Cary, Juan Jaquez, April Cary, Mary Beth Garrett, Hugh Garrett, and Robert Crim.
Martin is preceded in death by his beloved wife Joyce Hammer, his parents, two sisters, and one brother.
Those left to remember the truly wonderful and glorious life of Martin is: his daughter Marsha Ann Cary and husband John of Del Rio, Texas, his son Steven Wayne Hammer of Amarillo, Texas, his sister Mary Ann Anderson of Plano, Texas, two grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Martin is further survived by all his wonderful beloved friends that he made throughout his life.
