Joe Jerry Juarez, lovingly known as “El Tio,” passed away on July 2, 2026, in Big Spring, Texas. He was born on March 21, 1935, in Alpine, Texas, a place that remained closely tied to the rhythms of his life and the memories he shared with so many.

Joe Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Army. He later worked at car dealerships, and with an 11th grade education, built a life marked not by titles, but by character, humor, and the ability to connect with people wherever he went.

He was a man who truly enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. Joe Jerry loved to dance, listen to music, and talk with people. He could often be found in downtown Alpine at “Los Arbolitos,” parked and visiting with those around him, doing what came naturally to him—making conversation and sharing laughter. He also liked to park at the “Boneyard” cemetery to work his crossword puzzles, a quiet pastime that reflected his familiar routines. Above all, he loved watching movies on television, which remained his favorite way to pass the time.

Those who knew Joe Jerry will remember a man who spoke plainly and honestly, always telling the truth, but doing so with fun and laughter. He had a way of making people feel welcome, and he could talk up a storm with everyone he met. His positive outlook on life never left him, no matter what he had faced. He loved life deeply, and his favorite saying, “I ain’t going,” captured the humor and spirit that made him unforgettable. He was hilarious, enjoyed making others laugh, and leaves behind memories that will continue to bring smiles even through sorrow.

Joe Jerry was preceded in death by his sisters, Esperanza Juarez Martinez and Mary Lou Subia, and by his brother, Jesse Juarez.

He is survived by a loving circle of numerous nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward: his niece Sylvia Portillo and Armando; his niece Imelda Jean Portillo; his nephew Armando Portillo Jr. and Tanya; his nephew Ruben Martinez and Vicky; his nephew Joe Albert “Lochy” Martinez and Margie; his nephew Ervey Martinez and Cindy; his niece Betty Juarez Webb and Jim; and his nephew Manny Subia and Connie. In their lives, stories, and gatherings, Joe’s warmth, laughter, and unmistakable voice will continue to be felt.

A Rosary will be held on September 23, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 406 S 6th St, Alpine, Texas, followed by Mass at 10:15 a.m. Inurnment will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Angels Cemetery, E Avenue I, Alpine, Texas.

Joe Jerry Juarez will be dearly missed and fondly remembered as a man who brought honesty, humor, conversation, and joy wherever he went. His presence was one of welcome, his laughter was a gift, and his memory will remain treasured by all who knew and loved him.
