Jean Loefer

October 20, 1951 — January 24, 2018

Jean Jacobs Loefer, 66, a retiree of seven years in Alpine, Texas, passed away Jan. 24, 2018 at her residence with her husband of 47 years, Gene Raymond Loefer, at her side.

A viewing for Jean will be held on Tuesday, January 30th, 2018 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm with a Celebration of Life at 6:00 pm at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home, Geeslin Chapel.

Jean was born Nancy Jean "Jean" Jacobs, Oct. 20, 1951 in Rockmart Georgia to Mary Ardelia "Dee" Jacobs and Wiley Clyde "Clyde" Jacobs. She moved with her family as a child to Atlanta, Georgia. Displaced by construction of the Atlanta airport, they then moved to Riverdale, Georgia.
In the summer of 1968, she attended the Georgia Governor's Honors Program for gifted students. There she met her future husband and lifelong companion, Gene Raymond Loefer. They formed the team of "Jean and Gene", who would confuse and amuse countless people for nearly 50 years. They were married in Riverdale on June 20, 1970. She gave birth to their son and only child, Joshua Kenton Loefer on April 12, 1974 - a great birthday present for his father.
She worked many positions but completed her career as a human resources database specialist at Lockheed Martin in Orlando FL for 24 years. After she and Gene retired to Alpine from Lockheed Martin in 2011, she turned her passions to helping the Alpine Humane Society and volunteering work at the AHS Thrift Store. There she found the final love of her life, an elderly, aristocratic terrier mix, Scamp. They became a deeply bonded pair until Scamp's death, only a month before hers.
She is survived by her husband, Gene, of Alpine; her son, Josh of Charlotte, NC her sister Carole Jacobs of Riverdale, GA.; two nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dee and Clyde Jacobs of Riverdale, GA and her eldest sister Mary Clyde Dunaway of Rockmart GA.
Jean was an intelligent, tireless worker who always displayed a determined devotion to the people, animals and causes she loved. Jean acted as a supportive, surrogate mother for many of the younger family members. She was a voracious reader, avidly followed her favorite TV series, loved to travel, was a soccer and football fan, and reveled in the beauty of nature. Butterflies and flowers. Birds and animals. Lands from the oceans, the deserts, the forests and the mountains. Most of all, Jean shared her husband's passion for the night sky. No matter the hour, she was always a willing companion for astronomy outings. She was most definitively a "giver" and not a "taker". Her endless patience and boundless love will be sorely missed.
