Erith Hazel Wallis Vick, 88 years of age, passed on Tuesday, October 10th, 2023, peacefully in her sleep, attended by her cousins, the Murray family in Del Rio, Texas.
Hazel was born February 23, 1935, in Danna, Texas to the late Charlie Wallis and Erith Vilma Easterwood. She was the youngest of two children, preceded in death by her brother Gilbert Charles Wallis. Hazel loved school and often remembered traveling around Texas as a young girl with her father’s border patrol position, honing her cooking, sewing, and home making skills that prepared her for life teaching others home economics throughout the state.
Hazel met and married a fellow educator, the late Jonny Richard Vick Sr., during her later college years September 12, 1955, and had three children: the Johnny Richard Vick Jr. (Ricky) preceding her in death December 24, 1955, and survived by Dwayne Michael Vick, and Charles Edward Vick (chuck). She would share stories and share her heart of love and service with anyone along the way.
The only thing she loved more than teaching and storytelling was Jesus Christ and quilting. She supported her local churches with her whole self, cooking, organizing, and serving wherever needed in Del Rio, Tx and Corsicana, Tx. If she heard of a need, she would do everything she could to fill it with her gifts of sewing and cooking and always with a warm hug. She loved creating quilts that made the receiver feel special and loved and prided herself on always making things that were “a little different” and “bigger than you would expect”. As she aged, her diagnosis of dementia became more apparent and her ability to create and serve were stolen away but her love for others, a longing to have fun and to belong never left her. She clung to the family around her, and her spirit of love and service will continue in the hearts of those that were blessed to know her and call her mother, “My Hazel” and friend. In loving memory of Hazel Vick.
