Dorothy Mcmillan

August 12, 1929 — April 11, 2019

Dorothy Jean Crawford McMillan, 89, a lifelong resident of Alpine, Texas, passed away on April 11, 2019 in El Paso, Texas. She was born August 12, 1929 in El Paso to Guy Benjamin Crawford and Mamie Augusta McNees Crawford. She was a proud member of the Crawford pioneering family, who were instrumental in settling Alpine and other areas in the Big Bend country of Texas in the early 1900s.

Dorothy graduated from Alpine High School, and attended Sul Ross State University for two years pursuing a business degree. After marriage, she had a successful career as a teller and later a cashier for First National Bank of Alpine. Throughout her work career, she was the business manager for McMillan Shop, her husband's business. After retiring from banking, she was co-owner of the La Cabana Shop in Alpine.

In her free time, Dorothy was a member of Eastern Star, a member of the Alpine ISD School Board for 18 years, rising to becoming School Board President, and a 30-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was the impetus behind the effort to build the Big Bend Civic Center with her investment, vision, and leadership. The Dorothy McMillan Wing at Alpine ISD Administration Building was named in her honor for her tireless work on behalf of the district.

Many remember the delicious hamburgers that Dorothy made behind the grill at almost every bingo game at the Legion Hall for years. She married Elmer A. McMillan in Alpine on November 24, 1948, and they remained married for 62 years. She and Elmer lived in San Diego, California for a short time while he was in the Navy. They were proud contributors to the Alpine community, and very patriotic U.S. citizens. The "Stars and Stripes" and red, white and blue were on constant display at the McMillan residence. When asked, Dorothy said that her only real hobby was supporting her children and making sure that they were all loved.

Dorothy is survived by her children Janna McMillan Daniels (Dave) of Anthony, New Mexico, Terry McMillan (Susan) of El Paso, Jim Bob McMillan (Milton) of Cedar Park, Texas, Lonnie McMillan (Christine) of Granbury, Texas, sister-in-law Prudella Moore McMillan, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Guy Benjamin Crawford and Mamie McNees Crawford, her father-in-law Elmos A. McMillan, mother-in-law Betty O. Johnson McMillan, husband Elmer, her brothers James "Butch" Crawford (Dorothy) and Robert Crawford (Louise), her sister Betty Crawford Fielder Robertson (Billie), three sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law.

Church services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 19, 2019 at First United Methodist Church, 208 East Sul Ross Avenue in Alpine, followed by a graveside service at Elm Grove Cemetery.
