David James Howard, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, passed away, at the age of 86, from cancer at his home on June 7, 2025. Dave likely battled the disease for multiple years but dismissed his pain to “old age & hard work”. He was born on September 8, 1938, in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Dave proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 20 years. It was common to see a tear in his eye as he stood at attention to the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner. Following a brief stint with OIME in Midland, Dave moved to Marfa in 1982 and established D. Howard Electric which he operated for 42 years. During that time, he also spent 13 years as the Utility Manager for the City of Marfa. A “Yankee” by birth, Dave quickly endeared himself to the community through his integrity, commitment to doing the job right and fair dealings with his customers.
Dave was an avid reader, often completing a new book in a day. Later in life, he pursued a college degree coming within a semester of graduation. For Dave, the journey was as important as the destination. He showed his love for others through his humor and genuine respect. He often had an (embarrassing) nickname for all those he held dear.
Dave was an avid sportsman excelling in fastpitch softball, bowling, tennis and golf something he continued to play throughout his life. Later in life, he moved away from the field to being a coach and spectator and was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and Celtics, as well as the Washington Commanders. He also found joy in fishing, particularly the moments spent teaching his grandchildren his beloved pastime. Those interactions and the opportunity to provide sage advice was always more important than catching the fish, although he thoroughly enjoyed the latter as well.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joyce Collinsworth Howard; his son, Scott (Lynda) Howard; his daughter Lisette (Ray) Hawkins, his sister, Mary (John) Macdonald; and his devoted son-in-law, Ja Chriesman. He was a cherished grandfather to Ella Howard, Zach Chriesman, Bradley Hawkins, and Ashley Hawkins. His life continues through his great-grandchildren: Bryce McKenney, Sterling Daniel, Preston Hawkins, Raeli Hawkins, and Connor Hawkins.
Dave's (Uncle Buddy) legacy is further enriched by the numerous nieces and nephews who held him dear. He joins in rest his parents, Arthur and Rose Howard; sisters Kathy Richards and Anne Healy; daughter Lorinda Chriesman; grandson Christopher Hawkins; and brother-in-law Paul Richards.
Hard work, integrity and service to his country / community were hallmarks of his 86 years. Those that new him appreciated being able to share both their successes and challenges with Dave often receiving profound insights in return.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Melissa Livingston, Albert Dominguez, Robert Silva and Rachel Atuegwu for their devotion to Dave in providing comfort in his final months and weeks.
