Charlotte Lee Kowal passed away just short of her 90th birthday in Alpine, Texas on June 15, 2019. She was born Charlotte Lee Hinenburn on July 28, 1929 in Bronx, New York, the daughter of Dr. Morris Hinenburg and Rose Becker Hinenburg. She grew up in the New York area and in Denver, Colorado, where her physician and hospital administrator father held positions. Shar, as she was known to her friends, attended Adelphi College earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1947. She married Leonard Kowal in 1948, remaining happily married for 70 years until his death in 2017. They had two sons, David, born in 1950 and Robert, born in 1953.
Resident first in New York and later Scottsdale, Arizona, Charlotte occupied various positions as the administrator assistant and office manager in physician's offices, as an administrative consultant and controller for various businesses, and as the owner of her own business, Purified Air Systems of Phoenix, Arizona. Over the course of her life, she was an active volunteer and fund raiser for the Cerebral Palsey Association and the Association of Retarded Children. She was also a devoted lover of animals, particularly dogs. Upon the death of her husband, Leonard, in 2017 she moved from Scottsdale, Arizona to Alpine, Texas to take up residence with her son David and become part the Alpine community where she had made many wonderful friends.
Shar is survived by her two sons, David and his wife Linda Bryant of Alpine, and Robert and his wife Helene and grandson Zachary Kowal of Manitou Springs, Colorado, her younger brother Dr. Paul Hinenburg of Miami, Florida, and her dog Jacki, who is heartbroken over the loss of her mom. Donations in Charlotte Kowal's memory can by made the Alpine Public Library of which she was an ardent supporter.
