Our beloved Berta Valenzuela passed away peacefully, surrounded by the warmth of her family, on August 20, 2026. She was born on November 20, 1942, to Guadalupe and Esperanza Flores in El Paso, Texas. She grew up in Fabens and proudly graduated from Texas Western College in 1966, later pursuing her postgraduate education at Sul Ross State University, where she received four masters degrees.

Berta’s teaching journey began in 1966 at Socorro High School, where she inspired countless students as a physical education teacher and coach. Her passion for education continued when she moved to Alpine, Texas, where she touched the lives of many at Centennial School and Alpine Junior High. Whether as a classroom teacher, counselor, or diagnostician, she dedicated 56 years to nurturing kids' minds, earning a special place in the hearts of generations who affectionately remember her as Mrs. V. She not only taught science; she instilled values and inspired her students to become better individuals and citizens.

In the 1960’s Berta married the love of her life, Jesus (Kachoo) Valenzuela, and together they had two beautiful daughters, Debbie and Gloria. She was a devoted wife and mother, and her life centered around her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored. Berta was always there to cheer them on, following them all over Texas to watch them shine in high school and college sports. Her home was a haven of love, where family gatherings on Sundays and special occasions created cherished memories.

Berta’s heart was as big as her kitchen. She welcomed everyone with open arms, ensuring that no guest left without a full stomach. Many of her children’s friends from school found a second home at her dining table, and she offered the same warmth to countless Sul Ross students who were fortunate enough to share a meal at her table.

A devout Catholic, Berta cherished her faith and received her sacraments at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Fabens before becoming a beloved member of Our Lady of Peace when her family moved to Alpine. Her spirit shone brightest during the holiday season, especially Christmas. The day after Thanksgiving marked the arrival of her treasured tree, adorned with ornaments that each held a special memory. Berta loved to bake Christmas goodies as gifts, and her pralines were a source of pride, shared with all who crossed her threshold.

She leaves behind her two wonderful daughters, Debora Hardin, and Gloria Canaba (Troy), along with

her seven cherished grandchildren: Lauren Esparza (Teague), Ryan Hardin (Josh, her fiancé), Camryn Hardin, Taryn Hardin, Annika Canaba, Jayden Canaba, and Jace Canaba. Her great-granddaughter, Kynlee Esparza, is a little spark in her legacy. Berta is also survived by her three loving sisters, Beatrice Flores, Christy Gallego (Jimmy), and Magda Flores, along with fourteen nieces and nephews who were lucky to know her love. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kachoo Valenzuela, her parents, Guadalupe and Esperanza Flores, and her brother, Hector Flores.

Her pallbearers include: Troy Canaba, Jayden Canaba, Jace Canaba, Teague Esparza, Josh Kranz, Orlando Flores, Orlando Flores II, Luke Ornelas, JJ Gallego, and Mario Valenzuela.

Honorary pallbearers are Chris Hardin and Ricky Gandara.

Berta Valenzuela was not just a mother and grandmother; she was the heart of her family and her love will forever resonate in the lives she touched.
