Anthony Willis Green “Pap-pa” was a caring son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He left this world too soon on May 10, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 79 years old. Tony was preceded in death by his father, Wayne and mother, Lorene and brother, Morris.
Shortly after Tony was born (Uvalde, Texas), the family moved to Big Bend National Park (Castolon) where Wayne worked for the Department of Agriculture as a River Rider. Once Tony was of age to start school, the family moved to Presidio, Texas and then finally to Alpine, Texas where he graduated from Alpine High School in 1964. Tony met and married the love of his life, Mary Nell Wylie Green while attending Sul Ross State University. Upon completing his Master of Science degree in Biology at Sul Ross, they moved to Uvalde, Texas where he began a 27-year career as a high school Biology Teacher. Tony retired in 2000 and he and Mary moved back to Alpine where they enjoyed outdoor adventures along the Rio Grande and many trips with family and friends. Tony and Mary were married for more than 50 years before she passed away in 2021. Tony is survived by his son Lance (Susie), daughter Tonya (Holly), five grandchildren; Skylan (Ana), Nathan (Savannah), Katey (Willie) Becca (Devon) and Jake (Flavia) and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Tony’s love for the outdoors and the Big Bend country was instilled in his early years. Living along the Rio Grande as a child and camping, hunting and fishing with his family and friends throughout his life was truly his greatest passion. While Tony did travel to many places in and out of the country, his favorite thing in the world was being on the Rio Grande with his family. In looking back at his life, the Big Bend country will forever remain intertwined with who he was, a constant presence in the story of his life. Tony was ever pursuing new knowledge whether it was through reading or watching science or history programs. He could contribute and share insight to any conversation on any topic with the best of them. He loved sharing his family history and stories as well as his knowledge of the land, animals, geology, history and astronomy. Tony was truly a teacher and mentor not only by occupation but in his everyday life with all that knew him. His love for camping, fishing and hunting were instilled in his kids and grandkids who all enjoy being in the outdoors. We all loved his delicious cooking and playing many games of washers in his back yard. Tony gave so much to his friends and family and will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and love for his family and friends.
A graveside service will be scheduled at a later date at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Jethro Homeward Bound Pets (awos.petfinder.com/shelters/TX1635.html)
