Durwood Dean Avery, 85, of Marathon, Texas passed away Monday, November 3, 2014 at Odessa Medical Center.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 7, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Marathon. Military burial service will follow at the Marathon cemetery. Reverend Richard Zimmer will officiate. Alpine Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Avery was born in Valley Spring, Texas on August 16, 1929 to Jean Durwood and Sadie Sessom Avery. He was a corporal in the US Army. He had worked with Price Construction of Big Spring, Texas as a heavy equipment operator for eleven years. He had also worked for fifteen years for Texas Parks and Wildlife. He had been a member of the American Legion and was on the Methodist Church Board.

Mr. Avery is survived by his wife, LaVerne Avery of Marathon, daughters Patricia Duke and Jeri Skinner of Midland, Texas sons William D. Avery of Barnhart, Texas Michael J. Avery of Levelland, Texas and Lonny K. Avery of Alpine. He is also survived by nephews Clyde Tinsley of Malakoff,Texas Jimmy Conrad of Baton Rouge, Louisana, and Paul Parham of Round Rock, Texas nieces Linda Conrad of Baton Rouge, Louisana, Martha Huckeby of Irving, Texas and Sandra Hooge of Seymour, Tennessee.
